Who Needs a Gastric Bypass?

Ok, so you are a little overweight, well maybe more than a few pounds.

If this is the case, my guess is that you have thought about gastric bypass surgery. But before you take that drastic step, you must first understand who needs gastric bypass.

While gastric bypass or bariatric surgery might seem to be the light at the end of the tunnel and the answer to every weight loss question, it just should not be taken that lightly.

Gastric bypass is essentially weight-loss, also known as bariatric, surgery which quite literally alters the anatomical structure of your stomach and entire digestive system, limiting how much food you can eat and digest.

A gastric bypass is typically the most approved form of weight-loss surgery in the United States. It is generally considered to be safer and less complicated than other procedures.

While it might seem to be an easy answer, gastric bypass is not the answer to every weight loss need on the planet! It is serious surgery and candidates must be carefully screened in order to avoid as many complications as possible. Not everyone who is obese will meet the stringent criteria for undergoing gastric bypass surgery. Being fat is not the only token necessary to get you on the operating room table.

Who needs gastric bypass surgery? Well, there are lots of people who qualify but you should not even ask the question unless you have honestly given traditional weight reduction methods, such as dietary changes and exercise, first. If you can honestly report failed weight loss attempts and feel this may be right for you, then schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider.

So who needs a gastric bypass? You might qualify as a gastric bypass candidate if you are morbidly obese, generally meaning that you have a body mass index, BMI of 40 or more. Many physicians will also consider you to be a candidate for gastric bypass surgery if you have a BMI between 35 and 40 and you also have weight-related health problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure which could be resolved with weight loss.

Are you one of those many people who need gastric bypass surgery? If you believe this is a distinct possibility, then make a call to your healthcare provider and schedule an evaluation appointment.
